BEHIND THE BEANS
The Origin of Drinking Coffee
Legend has it that once upon a time, (we're talking like early 1400s) there was a goat herder named Kaldi who lived in Ethiopia. One day, he noticed that his goats were acting strange. They were jumping around and seemed to be very energetic. Kaldi followed his goats to a tree and saw that they were eating the berries from the tree. Kaldi decided to try some of the berries himself. He was surprised to find that they tasted pretty bitter, but they also gave him a lot of energy.
Kaldi took some of the berries to the local monastery. The Abbot, who was a wise man, was intrigued by Kaldi's story. He decided to try some of the berries himself. Surprised by the bitter taste, he began to experiment. He roasted them, ground them, and added water to them. The Abbot found that the drink helped him stay awake and focused for long hours of prayer. The drink was a success and soon spread throughout the monastery, and then the world!
Abbot Coffee celebrates the legend of coffee with every bag. We believe in sourcing directly from the small farms that grow the best organic beans, and we roast them the moment you place your order.
Cheers to The Abbot who brewed some beans that became the most loved beverage in the world.
